Turn on your Firewall – this is a very important step to staying safe and one that is very easy to do. For those wondering what a Firewall is, it is a network security system that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing network traffic that can prevent unauthorised access to or from a network. It can decide to allow or block traffic based on a set of security rules. To check or turn on your Firewall: Go to System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Firewall and turn it on (note that you may be required to unlock the padlock at the bottom-left of the window by entering your system password to do so). If it’s already on, well done 👍🏼

Update your Software – This one’s for PC users as well. Making sure your system is up to date with the latest software updates is extremely important for staying safe (remember the damages of the recent ransomware attack across the globe?), as they often come with important security patches that can detect or pick up threats on your computer. So when you get that alert on your Mac reminding you that a software update is due, make sure you click ‘Install’ instead of ‘Remind me Later’ (we’re probably all a little guilty of doing this)!

Look out for the https/padlock symbol🔒 – Very often you may have noticed that your URL starts with https, and depending on your browser, you may have seen a padlock icon next to it. The ‘S’ on the https stands for ‘secure’, which means your navigation and interaction within the page (not necessarily meaning that whole website) are encrypted and more secure. So the next time you’re entering your login credentials and you’re not able to spot the padlock icon or https, you may want to think twice about entering any important data.

Set some login credentials on your computer – This is an obvious one to stay safe but you’ll be surprised with how many people don’t set a password on their computer. We know how easy it is just to open up your laptop and have your system to start up automatically, but imagine if your laptop got stolen; your information is readily available and you’ve made that person’s job a whole lot easier.

Install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware – This software will scan your laptop for any potential adware and malware threats. Oh and the great part of this? It’s free. Once installed, click the scan button and it will check to see if there is any adware or malware lurking within your Mac. It’s good to run the software every couple of weeks to make sure your laptop is safe and secure while maintaining the software’s database is up-to-date (which updates every time the program is launched).

There you have it. 5 easy ways for you to stay safe online and on your Mac. Making small changes like this will help you to secure your Mac and best of all it’ll give you that extra edge towards online safety.
